The Bears look to get back to winning ways

Today we are away to Westhoughton for a tough encounter.

As the game gets underway the Bears are straight out of the traps and belting our opponents with some hard tackles this seemed to rattle Westhoughton early on, and after a scrum down the Bears force their way up field and the ball is slipped to Callum Cottington to score under the sticks, Joe Rustage with the kick, score 0-6

Fair play to Westhoughton who didn’t let this early setback rattle them and with a good break down the wing they score between the sticks, the kick was converted, score 6-6

The Bears needed to react to this and stamp their authority on the game and after some sublime rugby played at a fast pace that man Callum Cottington scores again with a great try, Tom Grundy with the kick, score 6-12

As the game is nearing half time Westhoughton won’t lie down and come back at us again on the 5th tackle and a clever kick in the corner their winger was first to react to score in the corner, the kick was missed making the half time score 10-12

A good first half for the Bears and if we can eradicate the handling errors we should be able to get some daylight second half on the scoreboard.

Second half gets underway and its not long before the Bears get into their stride and with a great break from Callum Cottington and nearing the try line he slips the ball to George Green to fly over the line, Callum Cottington with the kick, score 10-18

The Bears are starting to dominate the game and playing some great rugby and with a great team passing move the ball is out to Daniel Hill on the wing who makes no mistake to score in the corner, the kick was missed, score 10-22

With some daylight on the scoreboard and the Bears playing well are Westhoughton going to Crumble? Westhoughton had other ideas and with another good break they score to put the pressure back on, the kick was converted, score 16-22

Westhoughton have surely got themselves back in the game but its the Bears who capitalise on a Westhoughton knock on, from the scrum the Bears get right up field and Callum Cottington scores again to get his hat trick, the kick was missed, score 16-26

Surely the Bears can see the game out now with 5 minutes left on the clock but Westhoughton come right back at us scoring late on between the sticks, the kick was converted, score 22-26

With just minutes left to the final whistle the Bears manage to keep their nerve and see out the game to claim the victory, final score 22-26

A great game to watch and played in the right spirit from both teams was a little nervy at the end but the Bears played very well today in large parts of the game against a tough team in Westhoughton

Well done lads

Connor Ashley

1st Callum Cottington
